About El Buen Gusto – Spanish Tapas Restaurant in Harborne, Birmingham

At El Buen Gusto, we believe great food goes beyond the plate. It’s about atmosphere, connection, and community. Our independent Spanish Tapas restaurant on Harborne High Street offers locals and visitors alike a true taste of Spain, from sizzling tapas to rich paella and perfectly paired Spanish wines.

Originally opened by a Spanish family, El Buen Gusto has always championed authenticity and warmth. In September 2024, a new team took the reins, committed to honouring the restaurant’s roots while elevating its vision. We’ve kept the heart, soul, and traditions alive, serving quality Spanish food with genuine hospitality.

Our Story: A Legacy Continued with Passion

El Buen Gusto began as a dream to share real Spanish home cooking with the Birmingham community. The original owners, proud of their heritage, infused the space with Iberian charm, making it a go-to destination for authentic tapas in Harborne, in a relaxed, family-friendly setting.

Since the transition in 2024, we’ve built on that legacy with fresh energy and an unwavering commitment to traditional recipes, imported ingredients, and exceptional service. Our journey continues each day with every dish we prepare and every smile we serve.

A chic table setting with rose wine glasses, perfect for a sophisticated evening gathering.

Our Values: Hospitality, Heritage, and Heart

Every decision we make is guided by our values:

  • Authenticity – Real Spanish cuisine made using genuine techniques and flavours
  • Warmth – Hospitality that makes you feel like you’re at a friend’s table
  • Community – Active involvement in local events like the Christmas light-up
  • Consistency – Quality you can count on, whether dining in or taking away

We don’t aim to be the biggest, just the most memorable Spanish dining experience in Birmingham.

Meet the People Behind the Plates

While we’re a small team, we’re passionate about what we do. From our chefs who bring decades of culinary experience, to our front-of-house team who greet guests like family, everyone plays a role in making your visit special.

Absolutely delicious tapas and plenty of vegetarian options. The food was fantastic with room for only tiny improvements. Aubergine (outstanding!), garlic oil mushrooms (amazing!), garlic bread (great!) courgettes (needed a little more honey), padron peppers (needed a little more rock salt), homemade lemonade (lovely!). Lovely staff, very friendly and helpful. Beautiful decor. Highly recommended!

Nice Spanish food. We like all those we tried, except the Aubergine Tapas which was a bit oily.As mentioned in the menu, it took about 25-30 minutes for the preparation of the Paella which was reasonable.

A fresh taste of Spain in Harborne…Booked this for a catch-up session with a friend through First Table. My friend was raised in Barcelona… from the moment we walked in, it felt like we were in a little tapas restaurant in Spain. From the tapestry on the walls, the decoration and as well as the music playing in the background that she couldn’t help singing to every now and again - having been “raised” with those songs. The premium sangria - 10/10!! So refreshing, 2 jugs served us well enough to give a mini buzz and enjoy the mammoth meal that followed. The food:Each tapa they brought our way somehow tasted better than the previous one. They were having an oxtail special that night and boy did it not disappoint. The paella’s are large enough for 2-3 people. I have had better paella in other restaurants locally, so would not recommend this as a dish to have. It was very soggy, and lacked basic seasoning. Also, you HAVE to try the jam on croquettes 😋, easily the best tapa we had.We also got some nice complimentary blue berry aniseed shots to top the evening off. Will definitely be returning with even more people, for more laughs and food.(I can seem to post all my photos or the vids)
